Flower Care

Flower Care Sunflowers:

Sunflowers are bold, cheerful flowers that can brighten any room or event. To keep your cut sunflowers vibrant and fresh, follow these care tips.

By following these simple care tips, your cut sunflowers will stay bright, cheerful, and beautiful for as long as possible, making them a stunning focal point in any floral arrangement or display.

1. Trim the Stems

  • Cut at an Angle: Use sharp, clean scissors or a floral knife to trim about 1-2 inches off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This maximizes water absorption and helps prevent air bubbles from blocking the stem. Make sure to remove any rubber bands or plastic sleeves/paper around the bunches.
  • Underwater Cutting: If possible, trim the stems underwater or immediately place them in water after cutting to prevent air from entering the stems.

2. Place in Fresh Water

  • Clean Vase: Fill a clean vase with fresh, lukewarm water (not too hot or cold). Lukewarm water helps sunflowers absorb water more efficiently.
  • Add Flower Food: If you have flower food, mix it into the water as instructed. Flower food provides essential nutrients and helps prevent bacterial growth.

3. Keep the Water Fresh

  • Change Water Every 1-2 Days: Sunflowers drink a lot of water, so make sure to change the water every 1-2 days. Fresh water prevents bacteria buildup and keeps the flowers hydrated.
  • Trim Stems When Changing Water: When you change the water, trim the stems by about 1 inch to ensure they continue absorbing water effectively.

4. Remove Leaves Below Waterline

  • Prevent Bacteria Growth: Remove any leaves or excess foliage that will be submerged in the water. This helps keep the water clean and reduces the risk of bacterial contamination.

5. Keep Away from Direct Sunlight and Heat

  • Cool Spot: Although sunflowers are sun-loving plants, avoid placing them in direct sunlight after they've been cut, as they can wilt more quickly. Keep them in a cool, shaded area away from heat sources, such as heating vents, radiators, or appliances.

6. Support the Stems

  • Prevent Bending: Sunflowers have large, heavy heads and long stems. To prevent them from drooping, make sure the vase is tall enough to support the flowers or use a sturdy floral support.

7. Avoid Ethylene Gas

  • Keep Away from Fruit: Sunflowers are sensitive to ethylene gas, which is emitted by ripening fruit. Keep them away from fruit to prevent them from aging prematurely.

8. Re-cut the Stems if Needed

  • If the flowers begin to droop or wilt prematurely, re-cut the stems by about 1 inch and place them back into fresh water. This can help improve water absorption and revive the flowers.
