Flower Care Astrantias:

Astrantias are unique and elegant flowers, renowned for their intricate, star-shaped blooms and delicate, frilled petals. These cut flowers bring a charming, rustic beauty to any bouquet or arrangement. To keep your astrantias fresh and vibrant for as long as possible, here are some essential care tips.

1. Trim the Stems

  • When you receive or cut your astrantias, trim the stems by about 1-2 inches at a sharp angle using clean, sharp scissors or floral shears. This encourages better water absorption and prevents the stems from sealing over. Cutting at an angle ensures the flowers can drink more water and remain hydrated.

2. Place in Clean, Cool Water

  • Astrantias prefer clean, cool water. Immediately place the flowers in a vase filled with cool water (not too warm or cold). Be sure to use room temperature water, as cold or hot water can shock the flowers. Avoid using tap water with high chlorine content; distilled or filtered water is ideal.

3. Change the Water Regularly

  • Change the water every 2-3 days to prevent bacteria buildup, which can shorten the vase life of your astrantias. When changing the water, also trim the stems again by about half an inch to help maintain their ability to absorb water.

4. Remove Submerged Foliage

  • Astrantias often have foliage that sits below the waterline in the vase. Be sure to remove any leaves or stems that are submerged to avoid rotting and bacterial growth. Keeping the water clean is essential for prolonging the life of these delicate blooms.

5. Add Flower Food

  • Add Flower Food: If you have flower food, mix it into the water as instructed. Flower food provides essential nutrients and helps prevent bacterial growth. If you dont have flower food, just plain water will do the trick.

6. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat

  • Astrantias thrive in cooler environments. Keep them away from direct sunlight, heat sources, or drafts, as excessive warmth can cause them to wilt prematurely. A cool, shaded spot with indirect light is perfect for your astrantias.

7. Support the Flowers if Needed

  • Astrantias have delicate, airy blooms that can sometimes droop or become heavy when in larger arrangements. If necessary, use floral wire or floral tape to gently support the flowers or stems, helping them stay upright and showcasing their intricate beauty.

8. Remove Wilting Flowers

  • As your astrantias age, remove any fading or wilting flowers to prevent the spread of decay. This helps to maintain the overall freshness of the arrangement and encourages the remaining blooms to last longer.

9. Re-cut Stems for Freshness

  • If you find that your astrantias are starting to wilt, cutting their stems again (by about an inch) and placing them back in fresh water can often help rejuvenate the flowers. Just be sure to trim them at an angle and ensure that the new water is clean and cool.
